Seal Pup Rescued in Atlantic Beach

A newborn harbor seal pup rescued from the Sands Atlantic Beach is now recuperating in the care of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation.

The 2-and-a-half foot female seal, less than a week old, was reported found by beachgoers Saturday morning with its umbilical cord attached.

Five People Hospitalized After Deck Collapses in Long Beach

Five people were injured after an outdoor deck collapsed at a Long Beach apartment building Monday evening.   

According to the Long Beach Fire Department, the victims, ranging in ages from 9 to 55, were having a barbecue on a second-floor balcony, at 271 Shore Road, at about 8:30 p.m. when the concrete structure fell to the ground floor, approximately 12 feet below.

Garden City Scores Fourth Straight Long Island Lacrosse Championship

Justin Guterding had three goals and an assist as one of five different Trojans to score in Garden City's 9-4 win over Miller Place on Saturday in the Class B Long Island boys' lacrosse championship.

Just days after they finished off rival Manhasset for their eighth consecutive Nassau County title, the Trojans captured their fourth straight Long Island crown and will head to Marist on Wednesday to play Niscayuna in the New York state semifinals.

Long Beach Police Get New Contract

Long Beach Police, who have worked without a new contract since 2008, were awarded a seven-year deal last week.

Arbitrator Arthur Reigel decided on the new contract, which runs from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2015, including five years of back pay. The first three years of the contract will each include a pay increase of 3.75 percent, a 3.5 percent increase for 2011 and 3.15 percent for each of the final three years.
