NYAW Awards West Hempstead High School Student Scholarship
Kassandra Melendez Receives $3,000 Scholarship to Pursue a Career in Civil Engineering

West Hempstead, N.Y. (July 1, 2021)—In partnership with the New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC-NY), New York American Water recently awarded Kassandra Melendez of West Hempstead High School, a $3,000 scholarship to pursue a career in civil engineering. This is the eleventh year that New York American Water has offered scholarships to high school students within its service area who have the passion and potential to become the future of the water industry.
“We are honored to award this scholarship to such an inspiring young woman whose dedication in high school will certainly translate into her college career and beyond,” said Lynda DiMenna, president of New York American Water. “The water industry needs bright and motivated individuals, particularly those pursuing careers in engineering. We look forward to following her successes as she expands her studies at Hofstra University.”
Kassandra graduated West Hempstead High School with a weighted average of 99.4 and will be attending Hofstra University in the fall. While attending West Hempstead she participated in many extracurricular activities including Officer for the Student Council, Captain of the Badminton and Tennis Teams, member of both the National Honors and Italian Honor societies, and she was the peer leader for TOP Soccer.
