Three Couples at The Bristal Celebrate Over 190 Years of Marriage

The Bristal Assisted Living at Lynbrook hosted an anniversary celebration for three couples who have been married for a cumulative total of more than 190 years.

Rabbi Susan Elkodsi of the Malverne Jewish Center and Pastor Steve Brower of Faith & Victory Fellowship Church in Freeport offered blessings of love, thanks and gratitude to Elaine and Herbert Sacks who have been married for 65 years; Eda and Vincent DeMatteis who have been married for 63 years and Margaret and Philip Falzone who were married 63 years ago.

Former Cedarhurst residents Elaine and Herbert Sacks have resided at The Bristal at Lynbrook since August of 2018. Elaine is 86, Herbert is 87. They met as children when their families shared a two-family house in Brooklyn. They began dating as teenagers but broke up shortly after as Herb enlisted in the Army. When Herb returned, they got back together and got married when Elaine was 21 and Herb was 23. They moved to Cedarhurst after the wedding where they raised their family. Elaine went to LIU and earned three Master’s degrees in special education, learning disabilities, and emotional distress. Elaine worked for the New York City Department of Education and became an assistant principal at PS279 in Brooklyn. Herbert worked as an insurance agent. They raised two daughters, Wende and Melissa and have four grandchildren. Herb resides in The Bristal’s Reflections Memory Care Neighborhood.

Eda and Vincent DeMatteis moved to The Bristal at Lynbrook from Brooklyn in April of 2016. Eda who is 88, was born in Italy, 92 year-old Vincent grew up in Brooklyn they met when Vincent was helping his friend put up wallpaper and Eda offered to help. Eda was the sister-in-law of Vincent’s friend. Eventually Vincent asked Eda to go dancing. They dated for about 6 years, before getting engaged. They were married in 1956, they have two children and three grandkids. Vincent worked for the MTA while Eda worked a dress designer.

Hewlett residents Margaret and Philip Falzone met when Phil called her office on a business-related matter. They got to talking and hit off. Margaret says it was love at first sight! They were married in 1956 and bought a home in Hewlett in 1961. Margaret worked in the banking industry, and Philip owned a grocery store. Margaret has resided in The Bristal’s Memory Care Neighborhood called Reflections, since November 2018. She grew up in Inwood, Phillip was raised in East New York Brooklyn.
