Towns Oppose Casino at Former Fortunoff
Town officials voice concern over possible OTB in vacant Westbury store.

Town officials are coming out against a possible gaming and casino in the former Fortunoff store at The Source Mall in Westbury.
Hempstead and North Hempstead town officials released letters this week condemning Nassau Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation’s plan to open a casino in the vacant building.
Town of North Hempstead voiced concern over a “lack of transparency” surrounding the process and that Nassau OTB’s announcement “reflected virtually no outreach to the community.”

“We join numerous residents of the Town of North Hempstead in stating our strong opposition to placing a casino at this location,” TONH Supervisor Judi Bosworth and Councilwoman Viviana Russell said in a signed statement Tuesday.
The casino would feature 1,000 video lottery terminals and gaming tables within the building.

“In the interests of fairness, openness and transparency, we are calling upon OTB to commit immediately to the suspension of this project and bring the entire process out into the light of day.”
Officials asked that a meeting be held this month for residents and elected officials in surrounding communities, including Carle Place, Westbury, and New Cassel, to voice their concerns.
The letter also cited safety issues for residents within walking distance and that the Third Precinct will face a “tipping point” in their ability to respond to the community’s needs.
Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray also weighed in on the casino.
“Hempstead Town does not have an official role or a ‘seat at the table’ with the gaming commission on this matter,” Murray said in a statement, according to Newsday. “Despite these facts, I will remain aggressive in voicing my concerns and advocating for local neighbors.”
