What Men Can Do If They Are Growing Breasts

Men can develop breasts at any point in their life.

Men can develop breasts at any point in their life and through medical monitoring and, potentially, plastic surgery, this issue can be resolved, a New York plastic surgeon said.

The condition is known as gynecomastia.

“They can appear at any time in a man’s life,” said Homayoun Sasson, MD, director of plastic surgery at Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream and Plainview Hospital. “It can happen as a newborn. Newborn males can come to this world with enlarged breasts, which is as a result of the mother’s hormones circulating in the newborn’s blood.”

For newborns, typically, these hormones level off in a few weeks and treatment is rarely needed, Dr. Sasson said.

Boys going through puberty may also experience this growth because of their shifting hormones. Physicians will typically monitor the male for six months to two years and if the breast tissue does not reduce, it can be surgically removed through either liposuction, surgery or both, Dr. Sasson noted.

Middle-aged men who are taking thyroid medications, hormone replacement pills, or some prostate, heart and anti-anxiety treatments, can also develop this tissue.
