I’m sure most of you are familiar with the Lou Reed song WALK ON THE WILD SIDE. In the second verse Lou sings of Candy who came from out on Long Island. Well to be more specific Candy came from Massapequa Park. She lived with her mom on First Avenue.

Candy Darling was born as James Lawrence Slattery on November 24, 1944. She would become one of the world’s first transgender superstars. As a teen, James (Candy) would transform himself into a woman and then take the LIRR from the Massapequa Park station into Manhattan where she was a regular in the downtown club scene. She was discovered by Andy Warhol and joined the Warhol beautiful people factory where she would gain international fame and go on to star in several Warhol movies.

Sadly, Candy died of Lymphoma on March 21st, 1974 at the tender age of 29.
