Here’s New York's Favorite Christmas Song — Do You Agree?

Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is the No. 1 Christmas song in the world. See if that's true in New York.

If you’re like us, your go-to radio station is overplaying Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” and it’s permeating your internet streaming playlist. That’s likely because it was the No. 1 Christmas song in the world last year, according to the streaming service Spotify. In fact, it ranked tops in every country except two — Iceland and Denmark.

In New York, though, that apparently isn't the case. According to the streaming giant, the hottest Christmas song in New York last year was "Alone on Christmas Day" by Phoenix, featuring Bill Murray, which was from Murray's 2015 Netflix special, "A Very Murray Christmas." And in 2014, the folks over at Bustle analyzed search data to determine that the most popular Christmas song in our state was "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" by Andy Williams.

And while we’re not entirely sure why no one has done it since, it got us wondering — do you agree? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Spotify said its analysis was based on Christmas music each state listened to most relative to the rest of the country. Users of the streaming service created more than 18 million Christmas-themed playlists, so they certainly had plenty of data to analyze.

“In a way, this is the Christmas song that most defines each state, like the state bird or motto,” the authors wrote.

One of their more interesting findings — a lot of people seem to love hearing Nat King Cole sing about chestnuts roasting over an open fire. “The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You)” was the top song in six states: Hawaii, Maine, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire and New Mexico.

Mariah Carey was the single most-streamed Christmas song of all-time with more than 217 million streams worldwide, (followed by “Last Christmas” by Wham! And Michael Bublé’s “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas”) but it wasn’t any state’s official Christmas anthem.

“The Drifters” appeared twice on the list — in both Dakotas — with their hit “White Christmas,” and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra trended most in Rhode Island, Delaware and Michigan for two of their songs.

Here were the top 10 songs across the globe:

  1. Mariah Carey – All I Want for Christmas Is You
  2. Wham! – Last Christmas
  3. Michael Bublé – It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas
  4. Justin Bieber – Mistletoe
