Here's How Much Massapequa Candidates Raised For 2020
It takes a lot of money to run for office. See how much each candidate raised to try to win.
MASSAPEQUA, NY — Running for office isn't cheap. Candidates on the ballot in 2020 raised thousands of dollars to try to win their seats.
We looked at the latest data available from the state and federal governments to see how much candidates that appeared on the ballot on Garden City spent. The most recent data available is form mid October for both. But it shows that, even weeks before the election, candidates were spending big to try to win.
2nd Congressional District
In the 2nd Congressional District, Democrat Jackie Gordon and Republican Andrew Garborino were squaring off to win the seat being vacated by Peter King. According to data from the Federal Election Commission, both candidates were spending big, with Gordon spending nearly three times what Garborino did.

There are still thousands of absentee ballots to count, but so far it doesn't seem the expense paid off. Garborino leads Gordon as of Election Day, 157,001 to 111,204.

Senate District 8
The race for SD 8 was an easy one this year, as incumbent John Brooks was running unopposed. Still, he raised and spent a good deal of money on the campaign.

Assembly District 9
In the 9th AD, Democrat Ann Brancato and Republican Michael Durso were running to fill a vacant seat. Durso raised nearly three times what Brancato did for the race.
The money seemed to have paid off for him. As of Election Day, Durso was in the lead 17,514 to 7,295. But there are many absentee ballots still to count.

Assembly District 17
In the 17th AD, incumbent Republican John Mikulin was facing a challenge from Democrat Mark Engelman. Mikulin definitely raised more than his opponent, as Engelman did not seem to raise any money for the race.
And in the early results from Election Day, Mikulin had almost double the votes of Engelman: 35,120 to 18,756.
