Jesus was already where we are striving to be: alignment with God, aware of His purpose, knowing God alone supplies life and all it entails. With the desert’s barren terrain and scant water highlighted as the backdrop, we can visualize how dire the situation was, and Jesus’ incredible fortitude and piety to overcome multiple obstacles and temptations.
It is the starting point, ground zero, with its elemental attributes of scarcity, but upon closer scrutiny could bestow vast spiritual treasures. The desert is peaceful, no masses of people to distract or contradict. It lacks busyness, with our obsessive attachment to skyscraper schedules and endless errands, we can admire the stillness. Finally, quietude breeds Soul speech, which leads to the he Holy One.
We comply with the Catholic Church’s decrees of repenting, fasting, abstaining, almsgiving, bearing precisely configurated ashes on our foreheads, and attending Stations of the Cross. These specific actions are Lenten disciplines, which can transfigure into discipleship if we dig deep enough, examen, and seek The Lord.
After some effort, it can be determined that Lent it is not a penal code, but a way of redirecting.
Instead of mindless eating, now there is a stipulation, a restriction, but it comes with a promise. Mindfulness shepherds understanding as to why your diet is curtailed and altered, which puts Jesus on your plate as the most soulful food to energize the body, mind, and spirit.
Lent is the season of joy because it evokes renewal. What could use some revising or revitalizing in your life?
~” And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect," Romans 12:2 ~
