
More than 5,500 PSEG Long Island customers were in the dark Wednesday night after a line of power thunderstorms swept across the area. A lightning strike also sparked a house fire on the island.
As of 9:13 p.m., PSEG said 5,566 of its customers had lost power, according to its outage map.
"This evening’s fast moving storm has caused sporadic outages across the island," PSEG said on its website. "All available personnel are working to assess storm damage and restore power safely and as quickly as possible."

A home in Franklin Square caught fire after being struck by lightning around 7:50 p.m., according to the Malverne Fire Department, which responded to the scene.
There are numerous reports of trees and wires down, especially in Nassau County.

The severe weather threat has ended for Wednesday night, the National Weather Service says, but more storms may be on the way.
"There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening," a hazardous weather outlook issues for the island says. "The main threat is from damaging wind gusts.
