Long Island Christmas Weather Forecast: Old Farmer’s Almanac

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has good news — in some parts of the country — for the romantics who shed tears, and maybe icicles, at the sight of a white Christmas. Others will have to settle for rain. And still others — poor things — will spend the day basking in glowing sunshine.

On Long Island, The Old Farmer’s Almanac weather forecast for Christmas calls for rain and snow, then sunny and mild. The publication considers Long Island to be part of the Atlantic Corridor region.

You’d think the The Old Farmer’s Almanac would have a pretty good grasp of the weather, given the famous yellow book has been published since 1792.

Not to be confused with the unrelated Farmers’ Almanac, distinguished by the placement of the apostrophe in its title and published merely since 1818, The Old Farmer’s Almanac forecast for Christmas includes every region of the country.

If you want sunshine, the book says, make Christmas a travel destination to the Desert Southwest or to Hawaii. Or be living there.

If you crave manageable snow on Christmas — not too much but enough to bring a bit of glisten to the landscape — you want to be in the Northeast, or so says the almanac.

“It should be a snowy, picturesque Christmas Day,” its forecasters say.

For lots of snow, the almanac points to regions it divides into the Northeast, Lower Lakes, Upper Midwest, Heartland, High Plains, Intermountain and Alaska.

“We expect the white stuff to blanket the ground for Christmas Day!” the almanac excitedly predicts for these areas. “Fresh flakes may fall in the days before Christmas, or even on the holiday itself. Look for the Almanac’s predicted ‘parade of snowstorms’ to march across the northern tier of the country, from central Washington into the Upper Midwest.”

And for those who get joy out of misery, they’ll have lots of company.

“In the Atlantic Corridor, Appalachians and Ohio Valley, snow is likely to mix with rain, making for a holiday that’s more wet than white,” the almanac predicts. “A dusting of snow is also predicted for the northern half of the Deep South, with rain showers appearing in the southern half of that region.

“Elsewhere in the country, including in Florida, the Southeast, and Texas-Oklahoma, as well as along the Pacific coast (Pacific Northwest and Pacific Southwest), we’re predicting that Christmas will be shrouded by brief periods of rain and cooler weather overall.”

And if you won’t be in the Desert Southwest or Hawaii for Christmas, remember: ’Tis the season not to be haters.

People who are there, the almanac says, can count on sunshine. If it makes you feel better, Hawaii may get some brief, warm showers. And the Southwest temperatures will be a bit nippy. It even may be chilly enough that while you’re stuffing yourself into uncomfortable rain gear, 10-pound coats and heavy rubber boots, you might have to snuggle into a slinky sweater.
