Massapequa Schools To Go Fully Remote Christmas Week
The district said it's taking the measure to minimize exposure and reduce possible quarantines before the holidays.

MASSAPEQUA, NY — The Massapequa School District announced that it will be going fully remote the week of Christmas.
In a letter to school district families, Superintendent Lucille Iconis said the district will be switching to fully remote instruction on Dec. 21, 22 and 23. Holiday recess begins on Dec. 24.
"We are hopeful that this additional measure will minimize any exposure that may jeopardize the health of our students, staff, and their families," Iconis wrote. "Additionally, this has the potential to reduce the volume of students and staff who may be subject to quarantine in the week prior to the holidays."

The Massapequa School District has been dealing with the coronavirus all year. Schools in the district have had to go to remote learning multiple times this year because of confirmed cases. According to the state, 127 students, teachers and staff in the district have contracted the virus since September.
However, the main spread of infections has been small social gatherings outside of schools. Officials are worried that the holidays could lead to a spike in cases as infection rates continue to steadily climb throughout the state. This week, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that January could be a "dark time" if precautions were not taken over the holiday season.
