Nassau Coronavirus Cases By Community: Virus Rages In December

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — The second wave of the coronavirus pandemic continues to hit Nassau County hard, with more than a quarter of the county's total confirmed cases happening in December. The county has seen more than 1,000 new cases a day as deaths continue to climb.

Nassau County has had 84,054 confirmed cases since the pandemic began. Of those, 22,882 — or 27 percent — are from this month alone. The county this month has also seen 106 new deaths, raising the death toll to 2,366.

According to Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, there were 598 Nassau residents in the hospital with the virus this week. Sixty-nine of them were in intensive care and 44 were on ventilators.

"Long Island is slated to receive another 126,600 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine this week and we continue to work closely with the state and Northwell on the distribution plan," Curran said in a statement on Monday. "But in the past few weeks we have seen upticks in our positivity and hospitalizations – reminding us that it is not the time to let our guards down. Please continue to celebrate smart this holiday season so we can avoid shutdowns and curb the spread of this virus."

Thousands of health care workers on Long Island have received inoculations against the coronavirus. Vaccines have also been distributed to nursing home staff and residents.

Eighteen Nassau County communities have recorded more than 1,000 confirmed cases of the virus. Of those, seven have more than 2,000 cases. Hempstead, the hardest-hit community in the county, has had 3,528 cases.
