Nassau Coronavirus: January Surpasses December To Be Worst Month

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — With 10 days left in the month, January has surpassed December to be the worst month on record for the coronavirus in Nassau County, recording more positive cases and deaths than the previous month.

As of Jan. 21, which is the most recent day for which data is available, Nassau County has recorded 29,275 positive coronavirus cases and 196 deaths from the virus. For all of December, there were 28,298 new cases and 141 deaths. The month with the most deaths was during the first wave of the pandemic in April, which had 1,637 deaths.

Since the first recorded case of the coronavirus on March 5, Nassau County has recorded 118,745 cases of the virus and 2,597 deaths.

January alone accounts for nearly a quarter of the county's total cases. Together, December and January account for 48 percent of total cases of the virus since March.

Nassau has been averaging nearly 1,400 cases a day for January, and nine deaths. If those trends continues, the county could see around 44,000 total cases by the end of the month, and nearly 300 deaths.
