Nassau Coronavirus: January On Track To Be Worst Month Yet

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — As the slow rollout of the coronavirus vaccine continues, the virus is still raging across Nassau County. January is on pace to have more cases than December, which already had more infections than any month since the pandemic began. More people have already died this month than last month.

December ended with 28,298 new infections and 141 deaths. As of Jan. 17, Nassau County had recorded 24,352 new cases and 150 deaths. January is averaging 1,435 new cases and eight deaths every day. December averaged 912 new cases and 8 new deaths a day. The county is seeing new case numbers like those from the height of the pandemic in April nearly every day for the last two weeks.

"Nassau County is promptly administering every last vaccine we get from the state and federal government, but demand is far outweighing supply right now," Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said in a statement over the weekend. "I'm frustrated by the federal government's failure to deliver adequate vaccine supply, especially with reports that promises made about a federal stockpile turned out to be empty. I will continue to press the federal government to ramp up delivery quickly so we can get more needles into the arms of residents. I urge residents to continue wearing their masks and avoiding unsafe gatherings so we can get COVID under control for good and kick-start our economic recovery."
