Nassau Coronavirus: More Than 10,000 Infected In December

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — As the infection rate of the coronavirus continues to increase around Long Island, Nassau County is seeing another surge in cases, and the daily death count is climbing. There have been more than 10,000 new confirmed cases of the virus in December alone.

Since the first confirmed case in Nassau County on March 5, 71,224 residents have contracted the coronavirus and 2,300 people have died, according to county statistics. From Dec. 1 through 13, a staggering 10,052 Nassau residents have tested positive for the virus and 40 have died.

The county is recording nearly 1,000 new cases a day as the infection rate goes up. Daily infections are similar to late March, when the first wave of the pandemic was gaining speed.

There are now 15 communities in the county that have had more than 1,000 confirmed cases — up two from a week ago. Of those, three communities have recorded more than 2,000 cases and three more are close. Hempstead, the hardest-hit community in Nassau, has more than 3,200 confirmed cases.

According to the county, as of Dec. 11, there were 380 people hospitalized by the virus in Nassau, with 53 of them in intensive care and 37 on ventilators.
