Nassau Coronavirus: Deaths, Cases Continue To Climb

Hundreds of people are testing positive for the virus every day and dozens have died this month.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Nassau County Executive Laura Curran on Monday announced the opening of more free coronavirus testing sites around the county as the death toll and new cases continue to climb.

The county recorded 65 deaths and 15,160 cases this month as of Dec. 19. There were 503 people hospitalized with the virus as of Monday, according to Curran. Of those, 61 are in intensive care and 38 are on ventilators.

"We're at a real pivotal moment right now," Curran said at a news conference Monday morning. "The first round of vaccine was delivered to our health care workers last week. More vaccine is coming today for nursing home residents and staff."

The county has already begun inoculating health care workers, according to Nassau County Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein. The county received 13,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and the recently approved Moderna vaccine is coming to the county this week, Eisenstein said. The doses will be distributed to nursing home staff and residents.

"It's hard to know the numbers," Eisenstein said about the total doses the county has received so far. "You always hear how much is the first shipment, but it's a rolling thing. So there could be more coming at any time. We expect more shipments to come in every week of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines."

Despite the rollout of the vaccines, Curran urged county residents to continue to practice social distancing, wear masks and wash hands frequently. "We want to make sure people are continuing to use common sense," she said.

Curran announced the county will again partner with Family Health Centers to offer free coronavirus tests to residents. Tests are available by appointment at the Family Health Center locations in Westbury, Hempstead, Elmont, Roosevelt and Freeport. Anyone can make an appointment by calling 516-396-7500.

There have been a total of 76,332 cases and 2,325 deaths in the county since March 5.
