Nassau County Surpasses 100,000 Coronavirus Infections

More than half of the infections were recorded since November, when cases in the county began to spike.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Over the weekend, Nassau County surpassed 100,000 total coronavirus infections, more than half of which were recorded since November.

The coronavirus has raged across the county in the last few months, picking up speed as people began to gather for winter holidays. As of Jan. 9, there were 102,594 confirmed cases of the virus in Nassau County, going back to the first infection in early March. But most of those cases came in the end of 2020. In November, the county confirmed 10,868 cases, with 28,298 in December and 13,124 so far in January, for total of 52,290.

December was the worst month of the infection for the county so far, recording even more possible cases than the height of the first wave in April.

Deaths also continue to climb, although they are not near the levels at the height of the pandemic. 2,482 Nassau residents have died from the virus since the pandemic began. There were 141 deaths in December, and 81 so far this month.

If current trends continue, January is on track to be an even worse month than December was, despite the distribution of the vaccine picking up. Every day this month, the county has confirmed more than 1,000 positive cases of the virus, with some days going as high as 1,700 cases. Daily deaths have also been in the double digits multiple times this month.

On the same day that Nassau County surpassed 100,000 cases, the first confirmed case of the UK variantof the coronavirus, which is much more contagious, was found in a man from Massapequa.

According to Nassau County, there are currently 744 residents in the county's hospitals with the coronavirus. Of those, 114 are in the ICU and 63 are on ventilators.
