Sonny Milano, Pro Hockey Player And Massapequa Native, Arrested

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — Sonny Milano, a Massapequa native who played in several games for the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey team last season, was reportedly arrested along with Colorado Avalanche player A.J. Greer following an argument and subsequent fight in Manhattan. NYPD detective George Tsourovakas told CNN the two hockey players were arrested in New York City around 6:30 a.m Sunday morning on assault charges.

The fight followed an argument over a bill, the New York Post reported, citing police sources. The duo was ordered to appear in court at a later date.

Milano and Greer were inside an apartment on West Houston Street near Sullivan Street in Greenwich Village, the Post reported, when the fight broke out with a 28-year-old man. The three had been reportedly arguing over a bill at a Chelsea nightclub.

The Blue Jackets drafted Milano, 23, in the first round in 2014. He played in eight games last season and was assigned to the team's minor league affiliate the Cleveland Monsters in November 2018.

Milano, who used to play at Superior Ice Rink in Kings Park, first put on skates and held a hockey stick at just 1 1/2 years old, according to Newsday. He put a puck in the net before turning 2, according to family lore, and at 17 years old was the high scorer for the under-18 U.S. National Team Development Program.

The Blue Jackets wrote in a statement it is aware of the arrest report and is reviewing the situation.

Colorado drafted Greer, a 22-year-old native of Quebec, in the second round in 2015. He played 15 games for the Avalanche last season and was later reassigned to the minor league Colorado Eagles.

The Avalanche said the team was also aware of the arrest.

"We will wait until the end of the investigation to comment," Senior Vice President of Communications Jean Martineau told CNN.
