Tractor-Trailer Strikes Southern State Overpass

Portions of the Southern State Parkway faced major delays Thursday afternoon after a tractor-trailer struck an overpass near the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, and another tractor-trailer got on the roadway.

Police say a tractor-trailer struck an overpass near Exit 28A in the westbound lanes of the parkway around 3 p.m. The accident closed the right lane and the entrance ramp to the road from the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway.

In addition, another unauthorized tractor-trailer got onto the Southern State near Exit 26 for Bellmore Road about 20 minutes beforehand. That incident also caused heavy delays on the road.

There have been several crashes involving tractor-trailers or buses striking overpasses on Long Island parkways over the past year. In April 2018, dozens of Long Island high school students returning home from a spring break trip were injured when their 12-foot-high bus slammed into a 7-foot-high overpass on the Southern State.
