Young Massapequa Firefighter Killed In Crash

Anthony Cardillo, a 21-year-old volunteer firefighter, was killed after driving into a utility pole, officials said.

NORTH MASSAPEQUA, NY — A volunteer Massapequa firefighter and Oyster Bay town employee died Friday morning after crashing into a utility pole.

According to police, 21-year-old Anthony Cardillo, of Massapequa, was driving south on North Broadway in North Massapequa at 5:18 a.m. when he struck the pole at the intersection of North Pine Street. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said an investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Cardillo was a volunteer member of the Massapequa Fire Department with Engine Company One. He was also an Oyster Bay public safety officer.

"Anthony's dedication to keeping town facilities safe deserves the highest recognition," Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said in a statement. "This is a heartbreaking day for the Town of Oyster Bay."

Saladino ordered that flags on all town buildings be lowered to half-staff in Cardillo's honor.
