Long Island Weather: Nor'easter Hour-By-Hour Forecast

This storm is no joke as we will be dealing with multiple threats over a 36-hour period.

A monster nor'easter is set to clobber Long Island all day Friday into Saturday. We will be dealing with multiple threats, especially along the coast.

Here's the latest on warnings from the National Weather Service:

  • A high wind warning has been expanded to the entire island. It will be in effect from 11 a.m. Friday until 6 a.m Saturday. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph are expected with isolated gusts over 70 mph on the Twin Forks.
  • A coastal flood warning will be in effect from 6 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Sunday for all of Suffolk County as well as northern Nassau County. Southern Nassau will be under a coastal flood warning from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday and then again from 6 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Sunday.

Less than an inch of snow is expected to accumulate on the island during the storm, but there remains "the potential for several inches of wet snow accumulation at the coast should some of the cold solutions come to fruition in conjunction with heavy banded precipitation," the NWS says.

The strong winds could knock down trees and cause widespread power outages. PSEG Long Island says it's ready for the storm, which is expected to undergo “bombogenesis." (Here's what that means.)

"All of our employees and contractors are prepared to respond and restore power as quickly and safely as possible to any customers who have an outage caused by the storm," PSEG said in an email to its customers Thursday afternoon.

With a full moon over Long Island Thursday already helping to churn up the seas, flooding is the primary concern for the area.

Coastal flooding could result in numerous road closures and flood homes, businesses and parking lots near the coast, according to The Weather Channel.
