GOP Chair Says HQ Targeted in Break-in; Police Say No It Wasn't

Town GOP chair says break-in try "looks like a "Bungled Blue Burglary." Democratic chair says Republicans are desperate.

MEDFORD, NY – Police are investigating multiple overnight break-ins at a Medford office complex that houses the Brookhaven Town Republican Committee headquarters.

A doctor’s office and a real estate office inside 3080 Route 112 were burglarized during the overnight hours between Nov. 5 and 6 and someone damaged the door of the GOP headquarters, but no entry was made, Suffolk Police said.

“Clearly, whoever did this knows that the key to today’s winning ticket is behind this door,” said Brookhaven Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia, adding that it looks like a "Bungled Blue Burglary."

"The timing and targeting of this location of this make it clear that this was not a random occurrence or someone seeking physical valuables," Garcia said.

Suffolk Police don't agree. Cash was stolen from the doctor's office. And asked if it's fair to say detectives do not believe the GOP headquarters was targeted, a police spokesperson told Patch, "Correct."

Garcia told Newsday he's "not alleging anything," but he had this to say this afternoon on LI News Radio: "It's not the Russians that mess with elections. You know these are partisan far-left radicals that have nothing better to do than to try to cheat and change the course of elections. But they can't do that in Brookhaven because our doors hold."

Brookhaven Democratic chairwoman Lillian Clayman called Garcia's comments "shallow, sully and simply not true," adding that she believed he was "setting himself up for making an excuse for how vapid the [GOP] message of divisiveness is. It's falling on deaf ears....But that what's you do when you are a Trumpeteer."
