20K Power Outages on Long Island As Severe Storms Strike

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for most of the island.

More than 20,000 PSEG Long Island customers lost power as severe storms pounded the region Monday night.

As of 8:24 p.m., PSEG says 20,245 of its customers are in the dark.

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect until 8 p.m. for most of the island. Flash flood warnings are also in effect until 10:15 p.m. in Suffolk County and 8:45 p.m. in Nassau County.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms, and may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is also occurring. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
