Calhoun High student Samantha Hernandez has been selected as one of the Hispanic Coalition of New York's 40 Under 40 Rising Latino Stars.

Calhoun High School student Samantha Hernandez has been selected as one of the Hispanic Coalition of New York’s 40 Under 40 Rising Latino Stars.
The 40 Under 40 Rising Stars program recognizes members of the Hispanic/Latino community under the age of 40 who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments and achievements in various areas.

An advanced science research student, Hernandez is studying the affects of bilingualism on the brain during the three-year program.
“I chose to explore the world of bilingualism because it’s always been there at my side my whole life,” she said, adding that she plans to study pre-medicine in college.

Christine Boyce, an advanced science research teacher at Calhoun, nominated Hernandez for the award.
“Samantha is the total package,” Boyce said. “She is a stand out student and has a passion for research.”
Hernandez is also a member of the high school’s Key Club, SADD and YUGA programs, and also writes for the school newspaper. Hernandez and Boyce will travel to Albany on Oct. 11 to accept the award.
