Long Island Weather: High Wind Warning Issued, Snow Squalls May Cause Brief Whiteout Conditions

One forecast model suggests wind gust potential of up to 70 mph in the area, which would be just 4 mph less than hurricane force.

A high wind warning has been issued for Long Island, with wind gusts of 60-65 mph expected overnight Saturday and Sunday.

The wind warning issued by the National Weather Service will be in effect from midnight until 6 p.m. Sunday.

At least one forecast model suggests wind gust potential of up to 70 mph in the area, which would be just 4 mph less than hurricane force, the NWS says.

The strong winds may down trees and power lines, leading to power outages.

"We are closely monitoring the forecast for damaging, severe winds expected to impact our service territory Sunday," PSEG Long Island posted on its Facebook page.

The winds will also make it difficult to drive high-profile vehicles, the NWS says.

Snow showers and snow squalls are likely late Saturday night into early Sunday on Long Island. Accumulations will range from just a coating to an inch, but the snow squalls caused by the powerful winds may cause brief whiteout conditions, the NWS says.

Temperatures on Sunday will also be well below average, with highs only in the upper-30s to lower-40s and wind chill temperatures in the 20s, the NWS says.

More snow is expected Monday on Long Island and it could make a mess of the morning commute.
