LONG ISLAND, NY — Snow could fall at a rate of an inch an hour Thursday, with 4-6 inches expected to accumulate across Long Island by the time the extended storm ends Friday evening.

The snow started Thursday morning. The morning commute was pretty smooth, though there were two crashes on Sunrise Highway that closed westbound lanes. One crash involved an overturned vehicle in the westbound lanes near Exit 50 in Bohemia and the other crash was at Exit 40 in North Babylon.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Friday. The heaviest snow is likely late Thursday morning through the afternoon. The snow will mix with sleet Thursday evening into early Friday.
