Strong Thunderstorms Slamming Long Island; 10K Without Power

Strong thunderstorms with frequent cloud to ground lightning are in the area. See wild photos of lightning strikes.

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement for Long Island.

At 8:01 p.m., radar indicated strong thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Freeport to Lindenhurst. They were moving east at 15 mph. Winds in excess of 40 mph are possible with these storms.

  • Babylon around 815 PM EDT.
  • Brentwood and Bay Shore around 825 PM EDT.

  • Sayville and Gilgo State Park around 845 PM EDT.
  • Middle Island around 850 PM EDT.
  • Yaphank around 855 PM EDT.
  • Shirley around 905 PM EDT.
  • Brookhaven National Laboratory around 910 PM EDT.
  • Mastic and Mastic Beach around 915 PM EDT.
  • Manorville and Wading River around 925 PM EDT.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms, and may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

A flash flood warning has been issued for parts of the South Shore.
