5. Merrick Native Cast on New Syfy Docu-Series: Kristin Hackett, 26, of Merrick was a cast member of Syfy's new docu-series, "Fangasm." 

4. Islanders Teach Fayette Students the Value of Hard Work: New York Islanders team members John Tavares, Colin McDonald and Travis Hamonic visited Fayette Elementary School and taught student the importance of working hard and teamwork. 

3. Merrick Woman Creates Anti-Bullying Musical: Artist-educator Lyle Cogen launched a anti-bullying back-to-school tour with her musical "Sticks & Stones."

2. Water for South Sudan Thanks Lakeside Students: Water For South Sudan, a non-profit organization, honored Lakeside Elementary School students for their support in the drilling of 40 new water wells in Sudan.

1. Merrick Resident to be Honored by Cancer Organization: Howard Kaden, a Merrick resident of 30 years, was given the Courage Award during the Voices Against Brain Cancer's Third Annual Join the Voices Run/Walk. Kaden was diagnosed with brain cancer in September.
