Town of Hempstead Offering Free Flu Shots for Seniors

Registration is underway for the Town of Hempstead’s annual Senior Citizen Seasonal Flu Immunization Program. Partnering with NuHealth (Nassau University Medical Center) and South Nassau Communities Hospital, Hempstead Town is offering influenza vaccinations for senior residents age 60 or older at several locations.

“Health officials recommend flu vaccines to reduce flu illnesses, and prevent flu-related hospitalizations and deaths,” said Town Supervisor Anthony Santino. “In recent flu seasons, between 80 and 90 percent of influenza-related deaths have occurred in people ages 65 years and older. A flu vaccine can reduce the chances of catching seasonal flu and spreading it to others.”

Immunizations will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. as follows:

Registration is ongoing at several Town of Hempstead senior centers. Space is limited, and participants are asked to register at a senior center at least one week in advance. Flu vaccines are provided with no out-of-pocket cost to the seniors. The administrating hospital will bill insurance companies; however, there will be no co-payments for those receiving flu shots.
