Tropical Storm Conditions Possible On LI When Dorian Passes

The latest on potential impacts from Hurricane Dorian on Long Island.

There's a 10-20 percent chance of tropical storm conditions on Long Island Friday into Friday night as the center of Hurricane Dorian passes well south and east, the National Weather Service says.

Wind gusts of 40-50 mph and locally heavy rain will be possible on the island, according to a hazardous weather outlook issued for the region.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dorian was a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 110 mph. It's located about 105 miles east of Vero Beach in Florida and moving northwest at 6 mph, the National Hurricane Center says.

The storm caused catastrophic damage and killed at least five people in the Bahamas over the past two days.

Dangerous rip currents and rough surf are likely to develop at Long Island beaches Wednesday and continue into Saturday as energetic swells from Dorian begin to affect the local shoreline. There may be dune erosion and localized washover impacts along the Atlantic Ocean beachfront on Friday into Saturday, the NWS says.

If Dorian trends to left of the the NHC's current track for the storm, stronger winds and heavier rainfall will be likely on Long Island Friday. If the storm trends to the right, the wind and rain threat would decrease.

"Please continue to monitor subsequent forecasts for any changes in track or intensity and fine tuning of hazards and impacts," the NWS says.
