Winter Weather Advisory Issued For Long Island

LONG ISLAND, NY – A winter weather advisory has been issued for Long Island with snow likely to make a mess of the Thursday morning commute.

A total of 2-3 inches in accumulation is expected on the island, which will be under the winter weather advisory from 10 p.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday.

Most of the snow should fall between midnight and sunrise, the National Weather Service said.

Hazardous conditions will likely impact the morning commute. Plan on slippery road conditions.

"An active weather pattern in the long term continues, but predictability with regard to specific details on precipitation types and timing of systems is low," the weather service said in a forecast discussion. "The first system may occur some time Saturday night into Sunday with the second system next Tuesday."

The full forecast:

Wednesday Night- A chance of light snow between 10pm and 1am, then snow after 1am. Low around 23. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Thursday- A 50 percent chance of light snow, mainly before 10am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 34. Wind chill values between 15 and 25. Northeast wind 7 to 10 mph.

Thursday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 17. Wind chill values between 10 and 15. North wind 7 to 11 mph.

Friday- Partly sunny, with a high near 28. Wind chill values between 5 and 15. North wind 5 to 8 mph.

Friday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17. North wind 5 to 8 mph.

Saturday- Mostly cloudy, with a high near 30.

Saturday Night- A chance of snow before 10pm, then a chance of snow and sleet. Cloudy, with a low around 24. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Sunday- A chance of snow and sleet. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Sunday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 19.
