Amtrak To Avoid 'Summer Of Hell' By Rerouting Some Trains To Grand Central

The service change will be in effect between July 10 and Sept. 1.

MIDTOWN, NEW YORK — Amtrak is rerouting some of its trains to Grand Central to avoid the "Summer of Hell" at Penn Station.

Starting July 10, six of Amtrak's Empire Trains which travel to and from Albany, will be running from Grand Central, according to the company. The changes will be in effect until Sept. 1.

The company's other lines will continue to use Penn Station, but will have altered schedules. Six trains on the Northeast Regional track will be cancelled between New York and Washington D.C., with three others making additional stops to accommodate passengers.

The Adirondack line, which operates between New York City and Montreal, will be combined with the Maple Leaf line, which stretches from New York City to Toronto, according to Amtrak.

There will be no changes to the Acela Express, Amtrak said.

Out of the 21 tracks at Penn Station, three will be closed one week at at time until maintenance is completed, causing many delays and cancellations which New York's Governor Andrew Cuomo said would create a "summer of hell" for travelers.
