Closing Time For Historic Grand Central Tavern

The Campbell Apartment gets ready for its final night out, at least for a while.

Grand Central Station's historic, hidden to most bar, The Campbell Apartment is closing up shop for the time being.

Blink and you'd miss it, the lavish Campbell Apartment is tucked away in a quiet, dark corner of Grand Central. Originally an office space for New York Central Railroad tycoon John W. Campbell, the space fell into disuse through the decades, until the Apartment was leased out by the MTA and renovated by Mark Grossich in 1999.

Its ornate stylings, antique furnishings and relatively quiet atmosphere made it a welcome pre-train respite far from the maddening crowds of Grand Central Station. It all stands to fall apart now that the MTA has awarded the lease of the Campbell Apartment to Scott Gerber, who runs The Gerber Group, which includes Irvington, a restaurant and bar in a Manhattan W Hotel.

Grossich will attempt to keep the Apartment open and has decided to appeal his eviction in court, a process Grossich's lawyer has called "illegal and unfair." Until then, train travelers and history buffs who like a drink or two will have to say their goodbyes, for now that is.
