Dave Chappelle to Host SNL for First Time, Joined by Queens Rappers A Tribe Called Quest

The comedian will be host of the long-running show on Nov. 12.

MIDTOWN, NY — Notoriously unpredictable comedian Dave Chappelle will be making a stop at one of comedy's longest-running institutions. NBC announced Chappelle will be hosting "Saturday Night Live" for the first time in his career on Nov. 12.

The now 43-year-old comedian started his comedy career in New York City 24 years ago, infamously being booed off the stage at the Apollo Theater. But for all the thousands of stand-up performances, movies and TV shows he's appeared on, Chappelle has never hosted the comic showpiece at Rockefeller Center.

The show will have a New York City feel to it with musical guest A Tribe Called Quest performing on the episode. A Tribe Called Quest, which is releasing its first album since 1998 next week, formed in St. Albans, Queens in the mid-1980s. The album was recorded before founding member Phife Dawg died in March 2016. MC Q-Tip, DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White, who left the group after their first album, are expected to perform. Their new album will be released one day before they appear on "SNL."

Chappelle, who walked away from his hit TV show "Chappelle's Show" and $50 million over a decade ago, went for 11 years without performing in New York City at all. He broke that streak with a successful 10-day run of stand-up shows at Radio City Music Hall in 2014.

We'll have to wait and see if Rick James makes an appearance on "SNL" as well.
