Driver Charged with Failure to Yield in Deadly Midtown Accident

The accident occurred July 1 at the intersection of 58th Street and Second Ave.

The driver of a pick-up truck has been charged after an accident in Midtown claimed the life of a 78-year-old woman, police said.

According to the NYPD, the accident occurred on July 1 at 11:07 a.m. at the intersection of East 58th St. and Second Avenue just a block from the Roosevelt Island tram station and near the entrance to the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge.

Mieczyslaw Truskowski, 63, of Staten Island, was arrested on the scene and charged with Failure to Yield to a Pedestrian. Teresa Martinelli, 78, of the Upper East Side, was transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where she died.

Truskowski was trying to make a left turn onto 58th Street when he struck the woman as she was in the crosswalk. He was taken into custody at the scene.

There were seven accidents at that same intersection in May alone, the latest month for which the NYPD provides collision data. Two of those accidents involved Failure to Yield cases. No one was killed, but there were four injuries.
