Famed Downtown Bialy Shop Opening New West Side Location

Kossar's Bialys, which has dished out hot rolls on the Lower East Side since 1936, is opening its second-ever shop near Hudson Yards.

The new, second-ever location of Kossar's Bialys will be housed in Ohm, a new 34-story apartment building on 11th Avenue near West 30th Street, just south of Hudson Yards.

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — After more than 80 years selling its traditional Jewish baked goods on the Lower East Side with little change, Kossar's Bialys is plotting a major one: opening a second location uptown.

The new, second-ever location of Kossar's Bialys will be housed in Ohm, a new 34-story apartment building on 11th Avenue near West 30th Street, just south of Hudson Yards.

Kossar's specializes in its namesake delicacy: a small, chewy roll, similar to a bagel but prepared differently and containing a stuffing-filled dip at its center, rather than a hole.

The new shop will also sell homemade bagels, babka, challah and other treats, according to Ohm owners Douglaston Development.

Kossar's will occupy the 1,200-square-foot, ground-floor retail space under a 15-year lease. The shop has been active on the Lower East Side since 1936, including in its current Grand Street location since the 1960s.

"We’re thrilled to have Kossar’s Bagels & Bialys at Ohm, adding one of the oldest New York City bakery staples to the rapidly growing food and beverage offerings in the area," said Joshua Young, vice president of market rate operations at Clinton Management, a Douglaston affiliate, in a statement.

The storefront was formerly occupied by Via Trenta Pizzoteca, a pizza restaurant. Owners did not say when Kossar's would open.

"Kossar’s was established at a time of uncertainty back in 1936, and in some ways, this past year has been similar with the uncertainty COVID-19 brought on, and the need for community that’s come out of it," Jonah Phillips, a partner at Kossar’s, said in a statement.

"Hudson Yards, like the Lower East Side, is a vision with community at its core, and we hope that Kossar’s will continue to grow and endure through the good and hard times for the next 85 years and beyond."
