Former Midtown Slaughterhouse To Become Affordable Housing, Grocery Store
The city has chosen a developer for the former slaughterhouse development project on the far west side of Midtown.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — The site of a former slaughterhouse on the far west side of Midtown will become a gigantic mixed-use development containing affordable housing, a grocery store and lots of space for amenities and offices.
The former home of New York Butchers’ Dressed Meat Company on 11th Avenue between West 39th and 40th streets will be handed over to Radson Development and Kingspoint Heights Development for a joint venture to develop the 24,687 square foot site, the New York City Economic Development Corporation announced.
The new development will be home to 230 units of affordable housing, a 12,000 square foot grocery, over 88,000 square feet of dormitory space, more than 28,000 square feet of amenity space and 200,000 square feet of commercial office space, according to the EDC. It is currently unknown what rates of affordability the housing will be offered at.

The space for amenities will include a health club, food court, and laundry facility, according to the EDC. The EDC did not say how tall the new structure will be, but judging by renderings it will be a high-rise.
City Councilman Corey Johnson, who represents the west side of Midtown, celebrated the planned development.

"The West Side is in desperate need of affordable housing," Johnson said in a statement. "This project will provide hundreds of families with affordable, high quality housing in the heart of one of the most important neighborhoods in the United States."
Johnson, Borough President Gale Brewer, Community Board 4 and city officials engaged in a 10-month-long public engagement process to determine community priorities for the development site. The site is currently home to an NYPD parking lot.
