Kewho Min, Accountant, On Summer Events In New York

Kewho Min highlights some of the best summer events taking place in New York City.

New York City is America’s cultural hub. You can find pretty much everything and anything here. It’s one of the greatest cities in the world, and with how much I’ve mentioned it before, I’m starting to sound like a bit of a broken record. But the city compels me to write about it. And since summer is in full swing, I figured I would highlight just a few of the best ways that you can try to beat the heat and enjoy everything the city has to offer.

Harlem Week
Harlem is one of the largest neighborhoods and greatest cultural mixes in all of New York City. If you are able, make sure to visit Harlem, whether you’re a citizen or a visitor. And any great neighborhood should have a great cultural festival, and Harlem doesn’t disappoint. The event begins on July 29th, with “A Great Day In Harlem,” and the event just stems from there. The irony of the event is that it actually runs for a month as opposed to a week. And in that month, attendees can enjoy various activities and events, such as a car show, a small business expositions and even an outdoor film festival. To finish off Harlem Week, attendees can stay fit and healthy by participating in the Percy Sutton 5K Run.

Outdoor Cinema at Socrates Sculpture Park
For those of you film buffs, or those looking to enjoy some of the world’s more arthouse-esque films, make sure to visit Astoria’s Socrates Sculpture Park. The more-than-a-month-long event begins in about mid-July and ends in the final days of August. It’s a great opportunity to expose yourself to independent and international films you wouldn’t have heard of otherwise. With selections from all around the world (including Japan, Italy and Turkey), this small film festival is a sure fire way to indulge in the art of film.

Summer on the Hudson
By far the longest event on this list, Summer on the Hudson runs from the beginning of May to the end of October! And in those five-and-a-half months you’ll be able to experience a variety of events that anyone can enjoy. From health events to karaoke nights and life-size chess tournaments, Summer on the Hudson is without one of the most unique and varied experiences that New York can offer.

I hope these events give you some idea as to what you want to do in the city this Summer.
