Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade: The Route, the Road Closures, How to Get Around

If your Thanksgiving Day plans take you through Midtown, here's what you need to know.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — If you're planning on attending the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade through Midtown — or if you're planning to drive, ride or even walk through the area on Thanksgiving Day — there are a few things you need to know.

Regardless of your plans, we've got you covered: Below you'll find the parade's route, associated road closures and train schedules so you can still get around.

The route:

The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at Central Park West and 77th St., where marchers will head south along Central Park West, according to Macy's. The parade will wrap around Columbus Circle and marchers will move east along Central Park South before turning South at Sixth Ave. The parade stays on the same path until it shifts west and finishes up at the front of Macy's Herald Square.

Several road closures will go into effect at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving and will affect various parts of Manhattan until noon.

Below you can find a breakdown of road closures in the borough on the holiday, according to the Department of Transportation (DOT). Further details can be found here.

  • 6th Avenue between 59th Street and 34th Street
  • 7th Avenue between 33rd Street and 40th Street
  • Columbus Avenue between 81st Street and 77th Street
  • Central Park West between 86th Street and east side of Columbus Circle/59th Street
  • 81st Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue
  • 76th Street and 77th Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue
  • 71st Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue
  • 68th Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue
  • 62nd Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue
  • 59th Street between Columbus Circle and 6th Avenue
  • Broadway between 59th Street and 58th Street
  • 40th Street between 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue
  • 36th Street to 39th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue
  • 35th Street between 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue
  • 34th Street between 5th Avenue and 8th Avenue
  • 33rd Street between 6th Avenue and 10th Avenue

Train service:

Subways and buses will be running on Sunday schedules on Thanksgiving, and the Staten Island Railway will be operating on a Saturday schedule.

Meanwhile, the Metro North will operate on a modified weekend schedule, with extra inbound trains in the morning and outbound trains in the afternoon to accommodate those who plan to attend the parade.

Similarly, the Long Island Rail Road will boost service for the holiday by adding 17 additional trains. There will be six extra Penn Station-bound rains in the morning and 11 extra eastbound trains departing Penn Station in the afternoon.
