Man Killed In Hell's Kitchen Crash Is Identified By Police

Police identified the 44-year-old Hell's Kitchen resident who died Tuesday after walking into a stationary truck.

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — Police have identified the man who was fatally struck by a delivery truck in a tragic accident on Tuesday.

David Piette, 44, lived just steps away on West 42nd Street west of 11th Avenue, where the crash occurred.

Just after 8 a.m. Tuesday, Piette stepped into the street from the north side of the sidewalk, hitting his head on the back of a Snapple delivery truck, police said. He fell backward and hit his head on the pavement.

Police believe the truck was not moving and that Piette walked into it without noticing it, the Daily News reported.

Officers responding to the scene found Piette unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from head trauma. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The 63-year-old truck driver stayed at the scene and has not been charged. The NYPD's Highway Patrol Collision Investigation Squad is still investigating the crash.

Since 2016, at least 11 pedestrians have been injured in crashes at the same intersection, according to the city's Vision Zero data.
