The man said he was visiting Ivanka Trump, police said.

MIDTOWN, NEW YORK — A man carrying knives and wearing a bulletproof vest tried to enter Trump Towers Thursday telling guards he was there to visit Ivanka Trump, police said.

Sixto Adames Benitez, 52, from The Bronx, was denied entry to President Donald Trump's New York City home at 725 Fifth Ave., around 4 p.m., the NYPD said. He was stopped by security guards after they realized that Benitez was wearing a bulletproof vest under his suit jacket.

A police search revealed that he was carrying two knives and a fake ID and he was arrested, police said.

Benitez displayed signs of psychiatric illness, according to the NYPD. He told the authorities that he was a U.S. Senator and that he was there to speak to Ivanka Trump about her fashion line.

Benitez was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and possession of a forged instrument, the spokeswoman said. He was transferred to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.
