New Pier 76 Park To Host Tribeca Film Festival Screenings

The in-progress public space where Hell's Kitchen's tow pound once stood will be christened by the Tribeca Film Festival this summer.

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — As the state races toward its promised June 1 opening date for the new open space on Pier 76, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday that the in-progress park would serve as an outdoor screening site for this summer's Tribeca Film Festival.

Hudson Yards will join the pier as two of the 13 citywide outdoor screening locations being set up for the festival, which will run from June 9-20, according to organizers.

For weeks, crews have been at work dismantling the former NYPD tow pound — an ungainly metal structure that occupied Pier 76 for more than 30 years before police finally vacated it in January, under pressure from the state.

In March, Cuomo said a temporary public space on the pier could open as soon as June, once demolition was complete.

Then, on Monday, as Cuomo announced the return of the Tribeca Film Festival following a year off due to the pandemic, the state revealed that Pier 76 would be one of 13 outdoor screening locations being set up across the five boroughs.

On opening night, June 9, Pier 76 will host the world premiere screening of "In The Heights," the new film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's hit musical, which will be simultaneously broadcast at all outdoor locations and at a Washington Heights movie theater.

"Tribeca was started to bring people together, and that's what we aim to do again this year, to connect communities across all five boroughs and share our festival experience, safely, while supporting local businesses," said Jane Rosenthal, who co-founded the festival following the 9/11 attacks.

The festival events will be concentrated on the pier's north end, leaving the area closer to the street open to pedestrians and sightseers, W42ST reported.
