Note-Passing Bank Robbers Strike Again In Midtown: Police

The teller walked away from the window and the man decided to take off empty-handed, police said.

MIDTOWN, NY — Another would-be bank robber has tried (and failed) to rob a bank in Midtown Manhattan by passing a note to the teller demanding money.

Police are looking for a man who they say tried to rob a bank in Midtown on Thursday just days after another man unsuccessfully tried robbing five Manhattan banks on Monday in a span of three hours — including three in Midtown — using the same strategy.

Police say the man entered Amalgamated Bank at 1745 Broadway, between 55th and 56th, on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 11:25 a.m. and passed a note to a teller with demands to hand over money — which is exactly how the recent pattern of Manhattan bank robberies have gone. A police spokesperson told Patch that it was unclear how much money the man demanded.

The teller walked away from the window and the man decided to take off empty-handed, according to police.

The man who carried out Thursday's robbery attempt is not the same man from Monday's robbery attempts. Banks, clearly on notice, have been ignoring note-passing bank robbers this week after a man successfully robbed a bank on Thurs., Dec. 1 by allegedly passing a note to a teller at Apple Bank's Seventh Ave. branch. That same man was said to be the one who tried and failed to rob five banks on Monday by passing notes to tellers.

The man in Monday's robbery attempt is described as a 55-year-old Indian male and stands five-feet, five-inches tall, according to police. He is said to be of medium build, medium complexion, and was last seen wearing a black winter coat with a black knitted hat.
