Pedestrian Killed In Hell's Kitchen Crash, Police Say

A 44-year-old man was killed Tuesday in a crash at a Hell's Kitchen corner where 11 others have been injured in recent years.

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — A male pedestrian was fatally struck by a truck driver in Hell's Kitchen on Tuesday, police said.

The crash happened around 8:08 a.m. as the victim, a 44-year-old man, stood on the sidewalk near the corner of West 42nd Street and 11th Avenue.

The driver of the vehicle, believed to be a commercial Snapple truck, told police he was backing into a parking spot as the man stood on the sidewalk near the rear of the truck.

Moments later, the man walked forward and collided with the truck, causing him to fall onto the street and hit the back of his head on the roadway, according to the NYPD's preliminary investigation.

Officers found the unidentified man unconscious with trauma to the head. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The truck driver stayed at the scene, police said.

The man's name was withheld pending family notification, and the crash is being investigated by the NYPD's Highway Patrol Collision Investigation Squad. No summonses have been issued.

Since 2016, at least 11 pedestrians have been injured in crashes at the same intersection, according to the city's Vision Zero data.
