Permits Filed For 47-Story Tower In Hell's Kitchen

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — A developer filed permits with the city on Friday to build a new 47-story tower at the site of the Covenant House shelter on 10th Avenue.

The plans call for a 520-foot building at 550 10th Ave., between 40th and 41st streets.

The mixed-use tower will have more than 450 dwelling units, 27,000 square feet of commercial space and 57,000 square feet for a community facility, according to the permits.

Plans have been in the works for years for Covenant House, the youth-focused nonprofit, to replace its existing eight-story building with a new, "state-of-the-art" headquarters.

The developer Gotham Organization agreed in 2018 to buy the lot for $78 million, intending to build a 12-story facility for Covenant House on the 41st Street side and a residential tower on the same site, according to the New York Post.

Demolition permits were filed in September for Covenant House's existing 10th Avenue building. The nonprofit's new home will be completed sometime in 2021, according to a September blog post by the organization.

The 47-story tower is being designed by Handel Architects, a firm whose other projects include the National September 11 Memorial and the Madison House tower in Murray Hill.

A construction timetable for the new tower was not provided.
