Photos: Nor'easter Hits NYC, Floods Streets, Destroys Umbrellas

New Yorkers were out and about during Friday's nor'easter.

NEW YORK, NY — New York City was hit by a nor'easter Friday morning which dumped inches of rain on the city on left dozens of umbrellas in its wake. The powerful storm is expected to harass New York into the early morning hours on Saturday with wet conditions and winds approaching 60 MPH the latest National Weather Service forecast shows.

The strongest winds are expected to hit late Friday afternoon through the evening. The gales could sustain speeds between 25 and 40 MPH and gust at even higher speeds, the National Weather Service says. Winds that strong can down trees, knock out power lines and make travel tough for large vehicles. The city is under a high wind warning until 6 a.m. Saturday.

Despite the nastiness, New Yorkers went about their business Friday. Pedestrians huddled underneath awnings and scaffoldings on their way to work and cars splashed through dark-brown puddles in the streets.
