WATCH: Thief Steals Pot of Gold Worth $1.6M, Lugs It Around Midtown Manhattan
The man walked up to the back of an armored truck and stole an 86-pound bucket of gold flakes worth $1.6 million, police say.
MIDTOWN, NY — Call him lucky or call him stupid, but don't call a man who found himself a pot of gold in the middle of Midtown a hard worker. Far from having to dig for the gold or follow some magical rainbow, the man had the gold practically handed to him. Practically, but not legally.
The NYPD is searching for a suspect who walked up to the back of an opened, unattended armored truck at 48 W. 48th St. on Sept. 29 and stole an 86-pound bucket of gold flakes worth $1.6 million. Police say surveillance video shows the suspect walking up to the truck in broad daylight and hauling off with his treasure.
The man proceeded to flee eastbound toward Third Avenue, police said, but he struggled to carry the 5-gallon bucket, briefly stopping to rest before finally making it out of the area.

The man is identified as Hispanic and stands 5 feet, 6 inches tall, according to police. He is between 50 and 60 years of age and was last seen wearing a black vest, green shirt and blue jeans. He was carrying a black messenger bag.
Video footage shows that the armored truck belonged to Loomis, and according to the New York Daily News, the company is said to be offering a $100,000 reward to anyone who can help track down the suspect.
