Explosion At Port Authority: How It Affects Subways, Commute

All subway trains are bypassing 42nd Street - Port Authority and Times Square subway stations after the explosion.

Update, 11:15 a.m.: Some service has resumed in the Port Authority area.

Normal service has returned to the 1, 2, 3, N, Q, R, W and 7 lines, all of which will now stop at the Times Square - 42nd Street station as normal as of 11:15 a.m.

Service has also resumed on the B, C, L and M lines in both directions, the MTA said.

The Port Authority bus terminal reopened at about 9:30 a.m. Officials at the terminal says commuters should contact their individual bus operators for information about service changes.

Commuters reported crowded subway cars amid the delays and gridlocked Midtown streets because of the road closures.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — All subway service to two 42nd Street stations has stopped temporarily Monday morning after an explosion inside the Port Authority bus terminal just after 7:30 a.m., police said.

The explosion, the cause of which is still unknown, is expected to shut down much of Midtown Manhattan transit options while authorities investigate the incident.

All 1, 2, 3, N, Q, R, W and 7 trains are bypassing the Times Square - 42nd Street station in both directions, according to the MTA. All A, C and E trains are bypassing 42nd Street/Port Authority Bus Terminal in both directions. There is no B train service at all as of 8 a.m. The 42nd Street shuttle is also not running.

All city buses have also been directed to avoid the area near 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue. The Port Authority has also been shut down.

NJ Transit bus service to and from Port Authority will divert to Secaucus and Newark Penn Station, according to NJ Transit. For NJ Transit bus route no. 126, Hoboken customers will be taken to the Hoboken Terminal for PATH and ferry transit service.

Authorities have cautioned commuters to expect traffic and transit delays near 42nd Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues while the investigation continues.
