Rapper Common Donates $10K To Hell's Kitchen School, Report Says

The Grammy-winning rapper visited P.S. 111 and gave the school a $10,000 check through the Adopt-A-Classroom program.

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — Students at a Hell's Kitchen public school may not have recognized award-winning rapper Common when he visited their school, but he ended up making a big impression, according to reports.

The Grammy- and Academy Award-winning artist donated $10,000 to P.S. 111 on West 53rd Street, between 10th and Ninth avenues, through the organization Adopt-A-Classroom, the Associated Press reported. Adopt-A-Classroom's mission is to fill the "supply gap" at schools, which leads 91 percent of the country's teachers to buy school supplies for their students.

Common visited PS 111 earlier this month with his mother to drop off the five-figure check, the Associated Press reported. At first, the young students had no idea who the rapper was, according to the report.

"The kids they were looking like, ‘Who is this dude? We don’t know him.’ But I’m still just here to connect with children, and connect with the people and our teachers. So, I felt that it was more fun. It is humbling, but it is fun to try and get them to pay attention," Common told the Associated Press.

Common also delivered a speech in front of students at the school's gymnasium, according to the report.
